If you go down too far past the lava layer you'll end up in the underworld, and we aren't ready for that yet. If you go down far enough to find lava, don't go any farther. You also should have found some bombs in chests, keep those in your inventory until the Demolitionist NPC moves into an empty room.
TERRARIA GUIDE FOR XBOX 360 FULL
There's no reason not to go ahead and get a full 2 rows of hearts, and you should come across plenty of chests as you go, hopefully collecting a magic mirror by now. They generally spawn in the cavern, though you may find some in the underground too. The life crystals are a red/pink color on the minimap and look like a heart in the world, break them with a pickax and then put them in a top slot and use them with. You'll want to go delving around to find life crystals to make your health bigger. Our next big objective would be to kill some bosses, so making our health bar longer first would be ideal. Once you have all that, it's time to wander a bit farther. Once you've gotten your hands on Gold or Platinum, you'll want to make a gold/platinum broadsword if you haven't already, and make better tools and the armor set of course. Using the anvil you can make weapons and armor out of the bars you made at the furnace. It can be made with 5 bars of the ore you have in your world. The next step is making an Iron or Lead anvil, depending on what's in your world. The stone bricks are grey and can be found all over the place, you should be able to find some near your house. You can make it with 20 stone bricks, 4 wood, and 3 torches at a workbench. However, the first thing you'll need is a furnace, which allows you to turn ore into bars. Once you've got a full set of iron/lead, you can start looking for tier 3 and 4, though you should still try not to wander too far off to get them. Stick relatively close to your house for now (try to stay in the underground section, or a little bit into the cavern), looking for ore of the first 2 tiers to make better armor, and also new weapons, I use broadswords. The first 2 tiers can spawn all the way up to the surface, the other 2 can spawn close to the surface but usually spawn farther down.

The area of the map you reveal is bigger than what you see on-screen, so make sure to check it often so you don't miss anything.
